The customer is responsible for paying any import costs to the shipping carrier, such as duties, import taxes, or brokerage/disbursement fees upon delivery. Some shipping carriers charge additional fees for collecting duties upon delivery.
Examples of potential import costs:
- Customs Duties: Charges imposed by the destination country based on the product's value and category. Each European country has its own tariff schedule and duty rates.
- Value Added Tax (VAT): Most European countries charge VAT on imported goods. The rate varies by country, typically ranging from 15% to 25% of the total value, including the cost of goods, shipping, and insurance.
- Customs Handling/Processing Fees: Fees charged by customs authorities or the courier company for processing the import. These can vary depending on the courier and the country.
- Brokerage Fees: If a customs broker is involved in clearing the goods, the customer may need to pay brokerage fees. This is common with express shipping services like UPS, FedEx, or DHL.
- Storage Fees: If the goods are held at customs for an extended period, storage fees might accrue. This usually applies if there are delays in the payment of duties or customs clearance.
- Disbursement Fees: Some carriers charge a fee for advancing duty and tax payments to customs on behalf of the customer.
- Other Local Taxes: Some countries have additional local taxes or environmental fees that could apply depending on the nature of the goods.
- Post Office/Administrative Fees: In some cases, the national postal service or courier may charge an administrative fee for handling the customs clearance process.
